To begin my design process, I decided to use personification as a storytelling element. I chose a menacing octopus to serve as the antagonist, representing the problem of coastal darkening caused by pollution. I then sketched several designs to serve as the article's eye-catching cover.
Final cover design. The octopus, representing coastal pollution, is darkening the coast, killing off kelp forests and the marine life that live within. The octopus is being fed by pollution from oil tankers, factory emissions, and runoff, as the article explains.
Final layout design, pages 1 and 2. The article is reimagined in a new layout that incorporates my illustration and layout design, breaking up the copy and adding visual interest to the article.
